چکیده
As part of a study to determine the effects of water filtration on the incidence of community-acquired gastroenteritis in Melbourne, Australia, we examined fecal samples from patients with gastroenteritis and asymptomatic persons for diarrheagenic strains of Escherichia coli. Atypical strains of enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) were the most frequently identified pathogens of all bacterial, viral, and parasitic agents in patients with gastroenteritis. Moreover, atypical EPEC were more common in patients with gastroenteritis (89 [12.8%] of 696) than in asymptomatic persons (11 [2.3%] of 489, p < 0.0001). Twenty-two random isolates of atypical EPEC that were characterized further showed marked heterogeneity in terms of serotype, genetic subtype, and carriage of virulence-associated determinants. Apart from the surface protein, intimin, no virulence determinant or phenotype was uniformly present in atypical EPEC strains. This study shows that atypical EPEC are an important cause of gastroenteritis in Melbourne.

Estimating Community Incidence of Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Shiga Toxin–producing Escherichia coli Infections, Australia
To estimate multipliers linking surveillance of salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections to community incidence, we used data from a gastroenteritis survey and other sources. Multipliers for severe (bloody stool/long duration) and milder cases were estimated from the component probabilities of doctor visit, stool test, sensitivity of labora...

Introduction: Nowadays, comparative studies are considered by researchers as one of the best research methods in educational affairs and planning, because the differences and similarities of educational systems are studied in order to explore strengths and weaknesses. Objectives: This study aimed to compare master's degree curriculum of the Iranian critical care nursing with the Australian Melb...
متن کاملMolecular Detection of Aminoglycoside Acetyltransferases Genes in Escherichia coli Isolated from Community-Acquired Urinary Tract Infections of Patients Referred to Amiralmomenin Hospital, Zabol, 2019-2021
Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most prevalent infections in patients referred to hospitals. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the leading cause of UTI. Emerging and spreading infection by aminoglycoside resistant isolates is a healthcare concern worldwide. The present study aimed to investigate the antibiotic resistance patterns and prevalence of aminoglycoside acetyltransf...
متن کاملEvaluation of ehxA, stx1, and stx2 Virulence Gene Prevalence in Cattle Escherichia coli Isolates by Multiplex PCR
Today, it is nearly 25 years past from investigation of Shiga toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) which is able to produce Shiga toxins and cause different gastroenteritis. Since incidence of gastroenteritis due to STEC is increasing, it's necessary to develop rapid, specific and accurate procedures like PCR. In this study, we used PCR method to detect and identify STEC in cultures of 55 Escher...
